IGU Thematic Conference 2022 Held in Mahendragarh, India
International Geographical Union (IGU) Thematic Conference, 2022 on “Sustainability, Future Earth and Humanities: Opportunities and Challenges”, was organized by the Department of Geography, Central University of Haryana, Mahendragarh from 24-25th November 2022. The inaugural session was presided over by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of the Central University of Haryana Professor Tankeshwar Kumar. Prof. Raghavendra P. Tiwari, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, of the Central University of Punjab was Chief Guest. Prof. J.P. Singhal, Former Vice-Chancellor, of the University of Rajasthan, and Professor Sushma Yadav, Hon’ble Pro-Vice-Chancellor, of the Central University of Haryana were Special Guest. Prof. Barbaros Gönençgil, Secretary-General, and Prof. Nathalie Lemarchand, 1st Vice President of the International Geographical Union (IGU) were Guests of Honour at the opening ceremony. IGU Thematic Conference brochure and a book on Geospatial Technology were released during the opening ceremony.

A plenary session entitled “Science, Policy and Human Response to attain Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)” took over the inaugural. The plenary panelists included academician and scientists such as Prof. Rana P. B. Singh, Former Head, of the Department of Geography, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, Prof. Nathalie Lemarchand, Full Professor, Université Paris 8 UFR eriTES Department de Géographie, France, Prof. Brij Maharaj, Senior Professor of Geographer at the University of Kwazulu-Natal in Durban, South Africa, Prof. Suresh C. Rai, Member, Joint National Committee of IUGG-IGU, INSA, New Delhi and Secretary-General, National Association of Geographers, India (NAGI) C/O Department of Geography, Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi and Dr. R. N. Sahoo, Principal Scientist, Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), Government of India, New Delhi. The plenary session was moderated by Prof. Milap Punia, Head, Centre for the Study of Regional Development, School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. The plenary session focused on the importance of establishing linkages between science, policy, and people participation in achieving Sustainable Development Goals looking at it in a multidisciplinary way.
The total number of paper presentations was 369 under pre-registered abstracts category. Technical sessions were clubbed into four slots (two slots each day). Each slot has 14 parallel sessions (total of 44 technical sessions). IGU Thematic Conference 2022 also organized the IGU Task Force Young and Early Career Geographers (IGU-YECG) best paper award in the memory of Late Dr. Manju Singh. In the session, Prof. Barbaros Gonencgil, Prof. Nathalie Lemarchand, Prof. Brij Maharaj, and Prof. Haseena Hashia were jury members adjudging the best paper.
Prof. Suresh Chand Rai, Member, Joint National Committee of IUGG-IGU, INSA, New Delhi, delivered a lecture during the panel discussion.
Prof. Barbaros Gönençgil, Secretary-General was the Chief Guest of the Valedictory function. Prof. Sunil Kumar, Registrar, of the Central University of Haryana was the Special Guest while Prof. Nathalie Lemarchand, Universite Paris, France, and Prof. Rana P.B. Singh, Former Head, of the Department of Geography, Banaras Hindu University were Guest of Honor. The Valedictory session concluded with thanking all the attendees and the local organizing team.
